If there was the pinnacle of the death metal genre, it would be Suffocation's Effigy of the Forgotten. Often ignored and overshadowed by its contemporaries during its initial release, retrospective reviews have been more generous, reclaiming them as pioneers of derivative death metal subgenres, slam, and more...

This album is all killers, no fillers as they say, with well-arranged songs and clever riffs. Frank Mullen's gutturals is intimidating and consistent; Terrance Hobbs has a vicious guitar tone that many would die for. Mike Smith hits everything out of the ballpark. Scott Burns comes into the picture and selectively separates the guitars from the vocals as producer, which can be a win for those who like dynamic ranges. The lyrics are more literature-ish, anti-religious and anti-war than expected.
