Notes
This release is the non-gatefold edition in thicker cardstock cover. Includes poster and hype sticker, and has the letter T in a red box on the spine. The gatefold edition is here: https://www.discogs.sie.com/Felt-Ignite-The-Seven-Cannons/release/13308186
Both editions share the same catalog number and barcode.
From Cherry Red:
"Produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins and featuring the skyscraping vocal of Elizabeth Fraser on the mighty Primitive Painters. Felt found themselves at the top of the independent charts. Unhappy with the overall sound though – it was as if some of Lawrence’s best songs were lost in an “ethereal swirl.” John A. Rivers has been given access to the original master tapes and six songs have been remixed. Also – side 2 has been focused, edited and “made symmetrical.” Finally these songs can be heard as intended by Felt. It has become at long last a cohesive whole."

bought this amongst others when i was visiting glasgow.. serendipitous moment. could not wait to listen to it once i got home. was hugging the bag of vinyls for the whole flight back.
i have just played it for the first time and much to my dismay, i was met with countless jumps and pops. side B is fine, not overly smooth or fantastic, but it’s fine. however, almost every song on side A was jumping and skipping every few seconds… really upsetting.
i assume it must be some sort of manufacturing issue, but i’m not sure.. i’ve only ever experienced this with one other lp before.. which i was able to return back to a local store. but i suppose i’m just stuck with this poor copy now. i am glad that atleast not every song is jumpy, but it’s still such a shame. -
Edited 5 months agoI like the remastering and the remix, vinyl quality is fine, but especially the re-packaging of all of these Felt re-issues is a failure on nearly every level. Contrary to the rough cardboard of the original this one's glossy, the artwork isn't circulating but only on the front, and the sleeve's backside is nearly blank (--- What's the idea?). We also get a useless poster which not even shows an impressive or well-made photograph, therefore the 1985 lyric sheet of the original which also contains information on the musicians and the production is missing. I do have both albums right in front of me, and it is all too easy to see which sleeve is the superior one. How can you miss the mark that far, when you obviously intend to offer a well-made and also high-priced re-issue? And with the removal of the wonderful song "Serpent Shape" from side 2 the whole thing doesn't even make much sense on a level of artistic qualification, because to me (who owns the original for decades) it even sounds and feels incomplete now. A major disappointment!

I’m fortunate to have this and a clean original copy, and I love both. The remixes are quite good here, keeping the spirit of the original while clearing up the gauzy haze that Guthrie added (I love his mixes too though).
The mastering and vinyl pressing are top notch, and hold their own against the original, even if they’re just a touch less full and round sounding.
I do wish they had left Serpent Shade on side two and included the lyric sheet, but oh well.
A worthy investment if you want this on vinyl but can’t get an original copy, or if you want the new mixes of the four tracks and the poster.
Overall a stellar reissue of a classic album. -
Can't comment on the vinyl quality but I heard the remixed tracks on Youtube before they were removed and to me they sounded very good. Different from the original mixes, much clearer and better separation, not everything bleeding into one another like the original mixes, I like both for different reasons. It's a shame the music itself has been messed with, Serpent shade has been removed which is IMO the most beautiful instrumental on the album.

I actually like these flimsy paper thin sleeves. All those overly thick tip on jackets comming out nowadays are cumbersome and take up too much space. We don't have to treat every vinyl reissue like it's a bloated artifact for the Smithsonian.

Got this today new, shrink wrapped and it was full of jump scares when listening to it, it jumps on every song. This never happens so I took a moment to examine the vinyl under light and it appears it has some slight indentations where the big jumps are, maybe from manufacturing? I'm not sure, has anyone else has this problem? For a $30 record and one of my favorite albums this is a bit maddening.

Edited 6 years agoThe other comment here mentions Gatefold, that is a different version than this one. The sound of the four remixed tracks on side one is very fine. The original mix of Primitive Painters sounds poor in comparison. (But it does sound like Primitive Painters) I am not familiar enough with the original tracks to have an opinion on the remix other than it sounds wonderful. Side two is interesting as it's Instrumental, vocal, Instrumental, vocal, instrumental. I prefer the vocal songs mix to the instrumentals but all are nice. This is silent vinyl (for me at least) drop the needle and it's no sound until the wonderful sound begins. Nice stuff.

No justification for the initial sale price, I have never seen such a cheap and flimsy gatefold. Besides that, no issue with the vinyl record itself.
