While I find the opening cover of "Somewhere" a bit overwrought, but a fair example of Waits' ballad output for that era, much of the rest of the album gives us gleans into the mutated jazz stylings we'd get in 'Heartattack and Vine'. Other than 'Romeo is Bleeding' and the titular 'Blue Valentines', I don't find much from this album particularly memorable. 'Blue Valentine' was nevertheless an enjoyable crossroads album for Waits- a crossroad from which he fortunately went the best direction forward.
