NORTHERN sees Taylor Deupree getting increasingly icy, but continuing to develop his melodic sense. "Everything's Gone Grey," for instance, sounds like melting cybernetic icicles, while the title track introduces some crackling warmth in with the brighter electronic tones, even as it sinks deeper towards the end. "A Dead Yellow Carpet" has an airy feel to it, thanks to the occasional woodwind sound tooting through, while "Shell Shell Bye" introduces some gentle guitar chords. "Haze It May Be" burbles like a mountain stream as seen by a satellite. The guitar returns for "November," which touches upon post-rock territory, without sacrificing any of its beauty. Another strong work from Mr. Deupree.
