It is the third collaboration between Miles Davis and producer/bassist Marcus Miller, after Tutu (1986) and Music From Siesta (1987), and is their final album together. The album mixes elements of the genres go-go, zouk, funk and swing jazz, combining electronic instruments with live musicians. The composition “Mr. Pastorius”, featuring drummer Al Foster, is a tribute to late jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius.

A great album with a great sound. Simple envelopes. The plate is heavy and smooth. Assertive, transparent sound, the stage is wide, the mass is quiet. I listened with pleasure. -

A very clean, quiet pressing, on my gear it plays great. But I'd like to hear that Doug Sax mastered it for vinyl and not kinda tweaked it from the cd masters, because there's a vibe of compressed here that goes beyond it being a product of the 80's. Our maybe that's how it was mixed and this is the range he had to work with. At the place known for its awesome cd mastering. Anyone? Just a curious bystander. And I love this album, had it on tape as a kid, when it was fresh. He was the greatest. Did I already say this is an awesome pressing? -

Edited 7 years agoThis is the best sounding version of this album (2011 Japan SHM-SACD) - the sound quality is very good and with a good dynamic range (not at all compressed or "Loud").
This is a strong Album within the later Miles Davis Recordings and his style and Trumpet playing is definitely on the mark! The "Go-Go" style and fusion does not detract from Miles improvisational Trumpet and the album still retains quite a bit of influence of modern "Jazz" so to speak. I also have the HDTracks 24-192 FLAC of this album, and the 2011 Japan SHM-SACD is by far the superior (if you can find a copy without taking out a second mortgage, lol). -
The only problem with this album is it came out a few years after 'Tutu'. Slightly fuller arrangements and a little more natural sounding but not as strict or 'one vision' as Tutu so is less of a statement in my view. Impeccable musicianship as you'd expect and still sounds fresh and lively nearly thirty years on.
