Notes

"Slave To The Rhythm" is the seventh studio album by Grace Jones, produced by Trevor Horn and released in 1985.

"Slave To The Rhythm" is a concept album featuring several interpretations of the title track. The track was originally intended for Inside The Pleasuredome" when the Pledge campaign was launched but eventually wasn't included.)

The original LP edition includes excerpts from conversations with Jones about her life, conducted by journalists Paul Morley, Paul Cooke with voice-overs from actor Ian McShane.

Portions of the original LP material are absent on several CD reissues. "Jones the Rhythm", "The Fashion Show" and "Ladies and Gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones" are all edited in length (with the latter track matching the 7" single mix); the interview portions between Morley and Jones are omitted, rendering "The Crossing" a fully instrumental track. "The Frog and the Princess" appears in extended form and is moved further down the running order, after "Slave to the Rhythm". Ian McShane's introduction from the start of the album, "Ladies and gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones", reappears as the intro to the song of the same name. Only North American CD editions, e.g., 2015 remastered edition retain the same track listing and running times as the original vinyl version.

Singles from the album:
Slave To The Rhythm - appears on the album as "Ladies And Gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones"
Jones The Rhythm
Slave To The Rhythm - appears on the original album edition as "Slave To The Rhythm" (track B1)

Trevor Horn vs Grace Jones - the results could only ever be nothing short of spectacular. This pressing / mix strips out a lot of unnecessary parts and presents the album in a more digestible format. Pressing is flawless, as you would expect from during this period.

what a odysee to get a cd with the original album. there must some fault in the database, i got 3 times a cd with the different tracklist and shortened version, a crime.against art...it were not the fault of the sellers. i ed different sellers, who offered the proper versions that are recommended here, but the cds were not what they seem to be, very confusing, also for the nice sellers.
so i spend more money to buy this french version.and i am very happy about it! it is almost perfectly remastered and sounds so clear and transparent, sound is essential to this music, i prefer this to the vinyl honestly.
i can here details i never got before...

i have been fascinated by this album since it came out, a work of genius, not so much by grace, but my mr.horn, who delivered a awesome production, timeless and still sounds amazing.
sure, grace is great also here, but i never was a fan really.
trevor horn made also some marvelous productions for frankie on their 12" records, a very unique sound unheard at this time.

some tracks are really freaky and not commercial, it is made to hear loud on a decent system or headphones, i am always blown away.

so, if you look for the original album in a perfect sound you have to check this, even if you don't like cds.
for me the music matters, the medium is second, although i love the vinyls.

It's part of this generation of CD's with very low mastering volume...

On my pressing "the crossing" is ruined with non stop "Jones, Mrs Grace Jones" samples.
Can someone help me please, on which pressing the real instrumental version is?

The omission of some interviews from the original release—plus the idea of remixing to accommodate their removal—had me feeling a little nervous about my purchase. That all went away as soon as I put it on the platter: it's a beautiful-sounding pressing and a shortened format makes this reissue all about the music; it's also one of the best productions I own on vinyl. Overall, it's as if the replay factor goes up and I find myself reaching for this record more often than I would've predicted. Probably my favourite Grace Jones album right now. Thankfully, it keeps Goude's monologue intact.

As with latheofheaven I used this (original pressing) LP as one of the demo testers for a new or reconfigured system. LOVE IT. When my collection got stolen I bought a UK CD version — one of the 'abridged' versions, it turned out — and the dynamic range and sound stage were absolutely crippled in the production process. Whatever you do, please don't waste your money on these versions, it's almost a different record. Honestly, hold out for the 2015 remaster or similar, you'll thank yourself!

A superb album and it’s years ahead of the sound of day Soul II Soul and M People that came nearly 5 years after. Trevor Horn is one clever guy. The original vinyl sound superb and the original CD has edited tracks. Some vinyl versions are like the edited CD too! It’s a flawlessly produced album. Pure ear candy.

Not sure if it's just my pressing was faulty, but new out of the package it has such horrific surface noise that it virtually renders the disc unlistenable 😔

One of Trevor's shining moments as a Producer of course...and Grace is always great.
This album needs the Super Deluxe treatment that was given to "Nightclubbing" & "Warm Leatherette".

(Having said that, I think the Blackwell/Sadkin Sly & Robbie trilogy of albums better exemplify Grace as an artist--you cannot beat that band!)
