Notes
Released on 15 June 1979.
Initial run of 10,000 copies was housed in a textured cover, pressed by the WEA pressing plant in West Drayton and sold until October 1979. Another 10,000 copies were pressed at the Pye pressing plant Tranco and sold until Mid 1980. Some of the Tranco pressings were pressed using vinyl that was translucent red when held up to the light. Reissued / repressed again in July 1980 by RCA and WEA (so that until July 1981, 77.523 copies were pressed in total). Later confirmed represses are from 1981 (Lyntone), 1983 (MVS) and 1985 (Linguaphone). The third and final mastered edition on Factory was done at Townhouse somewhere in the early 80s.
Peaked at # 71 in the UK Album Charts in August 1980.
Recorded in April 1979 at Strawberry Studios, Stockport. Also recorded during these sessions were the tracks "Autosuggestion" and "From Safety To Where...?" (both released on Still).
Outside is side A and Inside is side B. This however got mixed up by the pressing plant, asg Outside = B and Inside = A in the runouts.
The centre sleeve depicts "100 consecutive pulses from the pulsar 1919", taken from an image that Bernard Sumner found in 'The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy' (page 111, 1977 edition), which was a reproduction of a visualization created by Harold D. Craft, Jr., for his dissertation “Radio Observations of the Pulse Profiles and Dispersion Measures of Twelve Pulsars,” (September 1970).

Cut by Émile Lépine at SNB! Cannot recommend this edition enough. -
This press does sound stupidly good. Dynamic, lots of space and air around the instruments and vocals.

There are times where it sounds like Ian Curtis is in my living room performing; THATS how clear it sounds. Beautiful crisp pressing, can’t recommend it enough. -
Edited 17 days agoI have a copy of this with the barcode on the jacket, but different identifiers in the runouts for side A of “factus 1 a1 25086(3)… (P)”, which instead matches https://www.discogs.sie.com/release/15228663-Joy-Division-Unknown-Pleasures.
I did buy this used, so is possible someone mixed up the jacket with a different record, but was wondering if anyone else has the same? -
Edited 18 days agoI have a copy of this that matches the exact runouts/matrix for sides A and B, but has barcode 02313-83001-18 on the jacket, which is an identifier of https://www.discogs.sie.com/release/2167385-Joy-Division-Unknown-Pleasures. The barcode version has a different side A than this one. My copy is also translucent brown when held up to light, which matches the release this comment is posted on.
I bought it used, so possible someone mixed and matched, but was curious if anyone else has the same? -

I'm hoping that someone could help identify my copy. It most closely resembles the first pressing. Textured sleeve, rounded corners on inner sleeve, solid black vinyl, FACT 10. The matrix/runouts vary.
Side A (Outside): FACT-10 - OUTSIDE I B THIS IS THE WAY A PORKY PRIME CUT
Side B (Inside): FACT 10 - INSIDE I A A PORKY PRIME CUT STEP
Thanks for your help!

Edited 3 months agoI have this pressing and I want to throw a question out. The pictures above seem to show an inner sleeve with square corners; whereas, my copy has a rounded corners inner sleeve like the original UK press. Anybody else out there with this variation?
-
Here we have a good sounding reissue. This is probably digital transfer, but this sounds good for me. If you can not find OG or one of 80s repress, this will be okay. 4 stars.
