Spare a thought for the UK radio edit on this single, replaced by a previously obscure US edit on all subsequent PSB compilations. I'm not a huge fan of the song and the US version is a whole minute shorter so I'm not exactly complaining, but it's curiously revisionist when - for better or worse - this, not the short mix, was the A-side in Britain.

As far as I can tell...this is the only official release with the New York City Boy (The Morales Dub Beats) remix. This version is only available on this super rare white label promo! It's not a bootleg like some of the other cd releases (blocked for sale on Discogs).

Title track is one of the worst PSB songs. But the three associated b-sides -- Ghost of Myself, Casting a Shadow, Lies -- are among the better tracks of this somewhat lean era. The instrumental Shadow is particularly good.

Edited 17 years agoSome people liked "New York City Boy", some didn't. The video made for it was very nice. They even rebuilded the interior of 'Studio 54', complete, with a Andry Warhol lookalike. The album version can work as a 'club mix'. The Superchumbo's Uptown Mix (track 3) sounds like a copy of "Happy Days" by Paul Jacobs (which sampled Northend). The guitar riff is basically the same, recreated in studio.
"Casting A Shadow" is a conceptual masterpiece. Really. Composed specially for the last solar eclipse of the millenium, it was played 'live' for the event and equals in length the time the eclipse lasted. Radio 1 retransmitted the event but the presenters kept talking the whole time, which annoyed Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe.
Over the years, numerous prophets announced the end of the world when the eclipse was supposed to occur. "Casting A Shadow", played live, was supposed to be an artistic 'happening' based on that idea. The crowd reunited for the event was supposed to be part of this happening. PSB were thinking about the retransmission being the 'final product' (with the noises from the crowd in the background). That's why they were angry at the presenters. A short pause from them (about 20 seconds) gave a good idea of what is what supposed to sound like altogether (the screaming crowd - you can't tell if it's joy or terror - over the music). Good vs. evil, religion vs. science, purity vs. sins. Classic PSB themes set in a dramatic moment. You ask yourself : "Is this really going to be the end of the world, or will we get redemption?". In the end, of course, we're still there and we understand that we got another 'chance', and the question is: what are you gonna do with it?

Edited 19 years agoTell me, how blatantly gay can one sound? I guess that depends on your definition of 'gay'. In my view, anything that remotely attempts to capture the essence of Village People is shamelessly gay... not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. This PSB offering takes the cake as their most outrageous thing they've done in a long while. It's blindingly obvious to see the connection with something off a decadent Village People compilation; just like 'San Francisco' was an west coast anthem, 'New York City Boy' seems to be east coast equivalent. With some positively hot horns and a pumping disco bass line, it's an effort not to do the points or the knee drops. If you're all up for a decidedly guilty pleasure, you could do a lot worse than spin this track before your chill-out section.
