The center on the second side of the first record is very off-center, which makes the sound distorted. This is very annoying - a serious omission by the label. Such a defect should be corrected before production. Otherwise, the sound of the record is beautiful

This is a great-sounding vinyl! Plus, it also looks very beautiful.

The first three sides correspond to the 'second' official release, Nightwish - Angels Fall First. (One song from that album, "Once Upon a Troubadour", does not appear here.) The other songs on side D are early demos.

This is very much a first album. It's amazing to listen to now, and think about how many different directions Nightwish could have gone. At this point, I'm not sure I would say that Nightwish is a symphonic metal band. Keyboards are pretty prominent, with string-like sounds at times, but that sort of sound is not emphasized the way it will be on later Nightwish albums. It's probably more power metal, or maybe even folk metal, to some extent.

One of the things that striking about it is that Tuomas sings quite a bit, taking the lead on "The Carpenter" (which was a hit in Finland), and singing co-lead on several other songs. It's not surprising that not everything here is a gem, but there are some real gems, for sure. I'm quite fond of "Elvenpath", for example, and the suite, "Lappi", is a real treat. The demos are more finished than one might expect, too, and are really quite good.

As for the pressing, it's not bad at all. Pretty quiet and with decent definition.

Mein Gott, sehen die Bandmitglieder im Booklet des Debütalbums noch jung und schüchtern aus - richtig süß und pausbäckig. Genauso pausbäckig hören sich auch die Lieder an. Zwar sind bereits einige Komponenten erkennbar, die den späteren, erwachsenen Nightwish zum Erfolg verholfen haben, trotzdem kann die Platte leider nicht auf ganzer Länge überzeugen. Zunächst wird man auf den geträumten „Elvenpath“ mitgenommen, wo uns der Waldgott Tapio und seine Göttin Mielikki erscheinen, genauso wie die auf einem Besenstil reitende Hexe und der heimische Gnom, der gerne die Sauna für sich warmhalten möchte. Man merkt es schon, die mystischen Texte sind bereits vorhanden. Das „Beauty and the beast“-Thema wird durch ein nicht wirklich endes, zweiminütiges Intro eingeleitet und mal wieder durch den miesen männlichen Gesangspart vermasselt. Besonders in der zweiten Strophe meint man einen Haarsprayrocker aus den 80ern singen zu hören und die gruselig gehaltene Erzählstimme wirkt sehr lächerlich. Ich wusste bisher nichts von der magischen Bedeutung des Tischlers bzw. Zimmermanns, durch „The carpenter“ wurde ich nun darüber aufgeklärt. Bei dem Song „Astral romance“ kommt zum ersten Mal die faszinierende Stimme von Tarja durch. Zunächst von mir irrtümlicherweise als finnischer Titel gehalten, entpuppt sich der Track „Tutankhamen“ als eine Lobeshymne für den ägyptischen Pharao. Der darin enthaltene Querflöteneinsatz stammt diesmal übrigens von Mr. Esa Lehtinen. Der letzte fast zehnminütige Song „Lappi (Lapland)“ setzt sich dann aus vier einzelnen Songs zusammen. Als erstes das in finnisch gesungene folkartige „Erämaajärvi“, dann ein sich langsam aufbauendes Drumsolo in „Witchdrums“, das mystisch gehaltene „This moment is eternity“ und zum Abschluss das stimmlich anstrengende Stück „Etiäinen“, wo Tarja all das zeigt, was sie als Opernsängerin drauf hat. Hätte ich das Debüt zuerst gekauft, ich hätte nie mit dem späteren Erfolg gerechnet. Dies spricht umso mehr für die Band.

I have a question. Does those tracks version are different from the later release ? Or Are they the same? Thanks!

Hi all. I am trying figure this release out. I have a copy of this cd. It has the same bar code and company number (064 742-2). The covers look the same but my cd looks different than what is here. It shows that it was from 2002 from Spinefarm and Universal and made in the EU. Flip the disc over and it says made in . Is this the same release or do I have one not on discogs yet?

It is a good remastered issue for your collection. Sound is really little better than the original releases.
