Benny Goodman – The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert

Gotta love Benny Goodman - this two-record set of the iconic 1938 performance is just heavenly.

Columbia went out of their way to exploit the 45-rpm format with this release. Some tunes are edited to fit on a single side, while others stretch across multiple sides. I may be wrong, but it also sounds like the tape was sped up to help squeeze the tunes in.
Another noticeable quirk is that some discs are vinyl and some are styrene.
If you’re a fan of this material, there’s no need to explain. Just get it for the sake of having it! You’ll put your record changer to good use, or get a good workout changing discs every 3-4 minutes.

Pretty awesome concert, but be aware that this is literally a vinyl rip transferred to CD, and not a great one at that. Zero click removal was done, and I don’t think the record used was in very good shape in the first place.

This release sounds flat and lifeless compared to the three LP version that makes up this set: Benny Goodman - The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert Vol.3. Maybe Columbia's "Microgroove" wasn't all it was cracked up to be... I think they crammed too much music on each side, and it lost its pop and vibrancy.

I have a copy with B6 and C1 being on the same side. Do I have a misprint or is the master release incorrect?

The native one has green/silver label.

There were no original master tapes. Magnetic tape wasn't available as a recording medium in the US in 1938. The original masters were two acetate and two aluminum masters cut during the performance. One acetate master was sent to the Library of Congress archives, the other misplaced and found in 1950 by Benny's daughter. The aluminum backup masters were assumed lost as well but discovered in 1998. This remaster was made from the original acetate masters but unfortunately there is a lot of surface noise.

The label pictures in this listing do not agree with the text. As stated, blue labels with silver print.

My Dad introduced this album to me when I was a wee lad - and I have loved it ever since. I have many releases of this album set, but this remastered issue is my favorite for listening. It holds a place in my collection in the favorite area.
