MPO

Profile:

French vinyl, CD, DVD pressing and cassette duplication plant, manufacturing and distribution company founded in 1957.
The MPO initials stand for Moulage Plastique de l'Ouest (in English: Plastic Moulding of the West), sometimes spelled as Moulages Plastiques de l'Ouest. MPO can also be credited as M.P.O. on releases.

The original vinyl pressing plant was established by Monique and Pierre Tyrel De Poix in 1957 in Averton (Mayenne).
After continuous expansion, MPO has permanent offices throughout the world, with still a strong presence in Europe.
The group's current operations are structured around its three production sites and logistics centres: MPO (Averton and Villaines La Juhel), MPO Iberica (Madrid, Spain), and MPO Asia (Bangkok, Thailand), with numerous sales offices in Europe and Asia as well as a partnership in the US.

Vinyl:
Vinyl discs pressed by or mastered at MPO usually have a hand-etched "MPO" (in rare cases 'MP') inscription in the runouts.
Until 1985 there is just one pressing ring around the spindle hole (examples: https://www.discogs.sie.com/release/916543-Crime-The-City-Solution-The-Dangling-Man-EP/image/SW1hZ2U6MjMzODI4MzQ= ).
On discs pressed before the 1980s the runout can occasionally be stamped as well.

1984 to 2018:
From 1984 three concentric pressing rings around the spindle hole are starting to appear on releases (examples: retail).
When MPO appears in the runouts without the concentric rings, please use Mastered At only.

Since ~ 2017:
The MPO logo is laser etched.
Please enter this as [MPO logo]. When ® appears next to the logo, enter it as "[MPO logo]®" in BAOI fields.
The logo is followed by a laser etched stamper number in the format ## #####, where the first two digits indicate the pressing year (example). DO NOT ADD THIS AS LCCN NUMBER!
Where these numbers indicate consecutive years please enter runouts as a variant if there is an existing otherwise identical release. Examples:
- DJ Anna - Speicher 101
- Pearl Jam - Ten

Test pressing label designs:
- ??? to 1983
- 1984 to 1990
- 1991 to 1995
- 1996 to 1998
- 1998 to 2017
- 2018 to present.

* Test pressing labels may write: "échantillon" or "ECHANTILLON" that translates to "sample"

Cassettes:
"Duplication MPO" is printed on labels.

CDs:
MPO manufactured its first commercial CD on Dec 7, 1984.

CDs made at Averton are assigned the following SID codes (please do not credit the plant based on SID codes only):
Mastering codes: L031, L032, L033, L035, L036, L039, LY88 (can be misread as LV88!)
Mould code: 12##

MPO isn't always explicitly printed in the CD matrix, but can sometimes be identified by a string of tiny text with the following format:
CA [label cat#] [one or more "@"] IFPI [Mastering SID Code] M/D/YYYY HH:MM:SS [AM/PM] NNNNNNNNNN
Example: Troïdes Priamus Hecuba - Vous Êtes Ici
There was a forum decision to allow this for MPO in particular.
If you aren't sure, please ask in the forums.

When MPO is found in the matrix but the Mould Code is IFPI 13##, please use Pressed By - MPO Iberica instead.

Spent some time out of the vinyl game for a bit. I was used to MPO being one of the better plants, I’ve had to return SEVERAL of their pressings lately for all the reasons cited in other reviews. Very sad.

i have loads of new releases pressed by MPO from various labels & almost all have ended up with marks just from removing them from the sleeves, have pressing defects & even sealed stuff is covered in marks, worst quality control ever. the thing is i have loads of MPO pressings of releases from the 80s, 90s & 2000s & they dont get marked so easily & are much better quality. stuff from 2010 onwards is really bad quality pressings & is like quality control went down the pan

Bad quality control. I was well aware of its bad reputation but still decided to give it a go for my collection, and the record could barely fit into the spindle because the play hole was too small.

Easily the worst pressing plant around right now. I've never heard a quiet record from them. Even GZ and United have improved.

I got Pantera Far Beyond Driven. I was anxious to get it on vinyl as I've worn out probably 5 CD copies over the years and to my dismay.....it was THE WORST PIECE OF CRAP I have ever heard on vinyl. I will be avoiding MPO pressings going forward no matter what artist or how badly I may want the album. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!

French can't do it no more it seems. Got the terminator album, mint, scratches on LP, bunch of noise. Just bad.

Bad quality control on this one. My vinyl arrived with a lot of spots throughout, like sand spots.

Big scratch ruins track A3 of Blood on the Tracks. Based on that and bad reviews from others I’ll avoid MPO pressings going forward.

Lots of 90s House tracks were pressed or mastered by MPO. Very good quality for those. The recent ones lost on quality it seems... I have quite a few 2021/2022 titles mastered at MPO and they were full of clicks and crackles. Such a shame for what was before a quality standard.
