Smart Records Copenhagen

Profile:

"Beat With A Byte From Copenhagen"

Smart Records Copenhagen released many early TIP Records releases in Scandinavia. These releases included the exact same records (with same TIP catnum engraving) and TIP 'Shiva head' label on the A side. The only differing features were the sleeve (with Smart catnum), and sometimes a label over the info side.

Soulless, directionless, money grabbing Danish 90's enterprise. Mega Records were responsible, so it comes as no surprise that there's something iffy about the entire operation. Smart released very little original material, almost their entire catalogue was licensed. And Smart didn't just license the music, they'd use the original pressings as well and stick them in their generic company sleeves. Sometimes they couldn't even be bothered to replace the center labels. Deft cost cutting move, no doubt.

Add to this a complete lack of musical profile (goa trance one day, eurodance the next), and you have an unsightly deformity that bears all the hallmarks of a cheapo knockoff label. There's some good music on Smart, but their records are the unloved bastard children of any decent record collection, destined to clog up bargain bins everywhere. And their logo was a dung beetle. Apt, very apt.
