In honor of Blue Note Records’ 80th Anniversary, the legendary Jazz label is launching the Blue Note 80 Vinyl Reissue Series. Distinct from the Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series, this 2nd series curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman features mid-priced 180g vinyl releases in standard packaging with albums spanning the many eras of the label’s history presented by themes: Blue Note Debuts, Blue Grooves, Great Reid Miles Covers, Blue Note Live, and Blue Note Drummer Leaders. The series has been launched May 10 with the reissue of 3 remarkable Blue Note debuts—Herbie Hancock Takin’ Off, Dexter Gordon Doin’ Allright, and Robert Glasper Canvas—and continued with the release of 3 albums each month. The Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series represents a continuation of this acclaimed Blue Note Vinyl Reissue Series. |

Horace Parlan Quintet is listed in the wrong Series. It should be listed in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series.

I have a few from this series and happy with them all. I always come back to them as they sound amazing on my setup. They put out so much of that sweet analog sound, with great separation of instruments, and the sound is dynamic and lively!

Nowadays, I believe this series’ QC has largely improved since they added lined inner sleeves instead of the exceptionally rough paper offerings from earlier in the run.
My one complaint really is how cheap the sleeves are on these releases. I would do anything for this series to have basic, non-gatefold tip-on sleeves to emulate an original’s beauty. Blue Notes are not only musical heavyweights, but they’re artifacts of mid-century America; they’re heavy, Technicolor and eye-catching!
I truly believe that the only good reason this series hasn’t been given this treatment is to appease Music Matters; keeping their offerings more valuable, despite the company’s artificially inflated pricing. Tone Poets steer clear of the MM catalog, and this is clearly done deliberately.
It’s unfortunate that we can’t have it all… if these were presented in more authentic packages, I’d own every one of them. I think most people would prefer to shovel out the extra $5-$10 for the real deal package than pinch for flimsy artwork.
Just my two cents… Either way, Kevin Gray has done an excellent job on these (as always) -
So far I've bought 4 of these BN80 titles: 2 have been good from the get-go, 1 has needed a replacement copy and for another (Blue Mode) I've had 2 copies and both were riddled with non-fill. It's poor from Optimal. These albums deserve so much better.

Edited 3 years agosecond to none mastering and sound bravo! The pressing quality however is GARBAGE (to say the least) its like 50-50% to get a playable copy that has no non-fill ticks pops cracks all over the place (ofc after cleaning). Optimal is a joke pressing plant blue note should have sourced Pallas to do the job for those historic titles. Things like this make the hobby literally miserable

Edited 3 years agoFrom couple of titles I own, I have to say thank´s to all behind it. Properly selected, carefuly mastered, cut and except two copy high quality pressed. Despite the growing price of them, still really bargain. Highly recommended reissue series.

A lot of Tone Poet and Blue Note 80 releases are out of stock on the Blue Note Website. Are they going to be in print? Should I get them ASAP on other sites as they too might be out of print eventually?

Amazing reissue series - not just great quality records, but also great value.
It's a shame they didn't take this route for the 75th anniversary series (those were mostly digital masterings with crappy pressing quality from URP). -
