Common submission mistakes
Most common mistakes when submitting a (spanish) release:
- Using a record company as a label
Eg: Release: EMI-Odeon, S.A.
Please, do not tag the label entry with EMI-Odeon, S.A.
- Using “Edited By” or “Published By” to enter the expression “Editado Por” (Issued By, Released By)
- Using manufacturing country as release country (Not necessarily have to match)
Even if the record shows: “Made in ” or other countries (Austria, Holland...), release country must be Spain, provided that the release has been made to be sold on the Spanish market.
- Using “Depósito Legal” (DL) identifier as Cat#
Please enter it in BAOI (Barcode and other identifiers) section.
- Tagging as Reissue a CD release if the previous LP version is older (over a year and a half apart)
- Adding images of releases taken from Todocoleccion. Images with watermarks are forbidden in Discogs. -
Show this post
The initials from Depósito legal numbers more usually written are:
M-0000-1975 (for instance...) = from Madrid
B-0000-1988 = from Barcelona
V-0000-2000 = from Valencia
C-0000-1995 = from La Coruña
S.S.-000-1964 = from San Sebastián...
Another credit giving problems is "Coros" - Backing Vocals.
And by the way, Spanish instruments names giving problems:
Teclados = Keyboards
Batería = Drums
Bombo (from drums) = Bass drum
Caja (from drums) = Snare drum
Castañuelas = Castanets
Cencerro = Cowbell
Timbales (orchestral) = Timpani, kettle drum
Tambor = Drum
Pandereta = Tambourine
Metalófono = Glockenspiel
Palmas = Handclaps
Bajo = Bass
Gaita = Bagpipes
Flauta dulce/flauta de pico = Recorder
Pífano = Fife
Fiscornio or Fliscornio = Flugelhorn
Fagot = Basoon
Corno inglés = English horn
Trompa = French horn
Sacabuches = Sackbut
Chelo = Cello
Viola da gamba = Viol
Zanfona / Zanfoña = Hurdy Gurdy
Director (de Orquesta) = Conductor
Arreglo de cuerdas = String Arrangement
Grabado por = Recorded By -

Zapateado (Foot Tapping, Heel Tapping)
Tapdance [Zapateado]
Tapdance and Flamenco Dance are two different "pair of shoes".
It bugs me everytime I see Flamenco Dancing roles credited under Tapdancing.
I use Performer [Zapateado].
I already requested a credit role able to reflect correctly all those Flamenco dancing credits..
IMO Zapateado, Zapateo, Taconeo, Baile, Bailaora, Bailaor, Bailarina, Bailarín, etc.
should get a generic credit role like for example 'Flamenco Dance [Zapateado]' instead of stuffing all Flamenco dance related credits into the Tapdance credit.

Coro and Timbales are already in credits.
Coro, it's literally choir but in Latin dance music (salsa and such), it means the backing vocals.
Tthere's a difference in the instruments: timpani and timbales.
Exactly the meaning would be: Timbal de concierto -> Timpani (used mostly in classical music) / Timbal latino (used in latin dance/pop music, salsa, conjunto, charanga, whatever type of Latin/Caribbean dance music) -> Timbales. Those are quite different instruments.
Latin timbales are sometimes credited as paila/pailas.
Sometimes I see the credit "cáscara", that's actually not an instrument, but a special playing technique of latin timbales as seen for example here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C50z_AYNsHs
So cáscara -> Timbales [Cáscara]
Tumbadora and tambó are synonyms of -> Congas. I have sometimes heard them referred as "cuero" (skin), too. -
jvaahtera edited over 12 years ago
There are two instruments in credits, namely "Bajo Quinto" and "Bajo Sexto" that seem to cause confusion among s who don't know instruments in Spanish. There are many submissions where the bass players (bajo) are credited to the aforementioned instruments. Bajo Quinto and Bajo Sexto are actually guitar type of instruments used in Mexican music. 10 string (2x5) and 12 string (2x6) guitars respectively. Similar to Tres, that is a six-string guitar (2x3 strings) or Cuatro. Beware!
Quinto can also mean Congas. It's one size of a conga drum. There actually quite a few conga types that can be used in combinations. For example: Quinto, requinto, tumba, llamador, supertumba, ricardo.
So you can't get away from Spanish credits by replicating and translating the credits, you actually have to listen to the music to understand what it really means. -

OK, I was talking about Spanish language releases from the Americas and their specific instruments. I don't know anything about Spanish music though. I was just reminding that they seem to have some differences in terminology especially regards the instruments. -

You could always 'stuff it' into "Choreography" credit ;)
The sound created by the 'Flamenco Dance' footwork provides in itself the musical accompaniment or solo performance, like a flamenco guitar would do, but in this case the instrument (the nailed shoes) is "played" with the feet.
While the 'Choreography' credit is more about the visual aspect of dancing, the art of creating steps and movements, not the creation of sound. -

But "Coros" is Backing Vocals, imo
'Coro' translates into 'Chorus' [unlikely to be applicablr to a credit] or 'Choir';
'Coros' are 'Choirs' [unlikely a credit] or 'Choruses', in fact additional vocals only in the chorus parts of a song and therefore 'Backing Vocals', more of an Alias rather than an ANV ;)
great work everyone -

But "secuencias"? There's definitely nothing on that record that would be "Sequenced By". Is that "edited by" role. Because I think it's something to do with the segueing of some medley type of tunes on that record? -

I think that when on a record someone is credited as "Guitarra y coros" or "Bajo y coros", that means "Guitar and backing vocals", "Bass and backing vocals".
On base "Coro" is described as:
"Literally 'chorus' in Spanish, the coro in most Latin music has fixed melody and lyrics. Most coros feature two or three parts, rarely more, moving in parallel lines. The coro singer's function in a band is more like an instrumentalist's than a singer's."
Perhaps this can be used on latin releases, but on normal pop or rock bands I think it should be 'backing vocals'. -

Looks like this Martínez Parra has been credited for photography in other, much clearer cases. Without doubt I would say it's a true photography credit for the colour photo on front cover. Btw, that photography is great on the cover: Grin, grin, snap, snap, wink, wink, nudge, nudge...
And there's a separate printing credit on that release as well, usually printing credits include the necessary preparations like making the printing plates, colour separation etc. -

Usually those credits in old records are very non-technical, and not so precise. There are several cases in my own language (Finnish, that is) where the credits in local release seem to be complete rubbish, written by people who didn't know the exact terminology. So, I understand it's sometimes very hard to understand the credits even though you have a perfect command of the language.
I'd think colour photography was still kind of exotic art about 50 years ago. Maybe the expression 'fotocolor' just reflects that. -

I have a doubt with this recently updated release: Raphael (2) - El Día Que Me Quieras / El Niño Que No Pudo Nacer
Zzelesta, a label from Hispavox with Raphael circa 1973-1974

Ensemble (Orquesta) is wrong. It should be:

Compañía del Gramófono-Odeón, S.A.E. - Barcelona - is the printing company
Mod. 9242 - G - I reallly don't know the meaning of this serie. Mod. sure means Modelo = Model. Perhabs a kind of tax on the printing company.
"4ttas. off." is the printing technique, something like Quatricomia, full color,... -

Please I'd like solve a doubt about this credit in spanish: "Realización" (means something like Performance or a production role)
You can check it In this records:
Tony Frontiera - Libre Como El Viento (Tema Del Film "Papillon") Arreglo, Direccion y Realizacion: Alfredo Domenech (Printed on back cover)
Can we accept "Realización" as a production credit? Is it ok "Producer"?
IMO "Producer" but please s
Thanks
-

I think that's the correct, according to what is said on releases, I think it's a production role. -

Hi again, I would like help to know if a k7 of myself is part of a 3 Cassette set or perhaps marketed separately. This is the vinyl release: Various - La Edad De Oro Del Pop Español
I recently bought a related release named: La Edad De Oro Del Pop Español Vol. 3 with the songs of the third record from the vinyl release
Cat number from spine: 7 K 502022
Depósito legal: M-708-87 (printed on label B)
Ref number on label A: 7K 503021 5 ("5" in bigger size)
Ref number on label B: 7K 503021 6 ("6" in bigger size)
Tape is housed in a single case.
And here a reference from the Spanish National Library: http://catalogo.bne.es/uhtbin/cgisirsi/qan8J7WA8O/BNMADRID/6420115/9
My opinion: My tape is part of a 3-cassette compilation (similar to the 3-LP set)

In Popular and Traditional credits you should add the new one, Folk, when credited as "Folklore Castellano" or "Folklore Vasco", for instance. -

Hi, would like to ask again about the best role for dancing credits: Bailaor, Bailaora, Bailarín, Bailarina, Baile,... with flamenco releases. Now we have Choreography but I think this role better with directors of choreography, etc. But Perhaps exists a better one for the person that dances.
Here Various - Bailes Y Cantos de Andalucia with Other (Bailaor)
Here Farruquito - Farruquito Y Familia: Espectáculo En Vivo "Dancer" is wrongly used as tag and needs fixed but a good option.
Here The Paco Peña Flamenco Company - Live At Sadler's Wells, London with Performer (Dacer)
Here Various - Fiesta En Espana with Other (Dancer)

About Caja "Cajón" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caj%C3%B3n
Here Paco De Lucia* - Siroco is credited Percussion [Cajón]
Here Enrique Morente - Sacromonte is wrongly credited Idiophone [Cajón]
and Here Carmen Linares Con Gerardo Nuñez Trío - Un Ramito De Locura the right one: Cajón
Unknow if Caja is a variation of Cajón. Please some exemples from db to credit caja as variant of cajón.

On base we've got one credit for all not existent credits: Performer [Bailaor] would be perfect, while there's no specific new one created. Ask a request for a new credit role. Choreography in wikipedia: "Choreography is the art of deg sequences of movements in which motion, form, or both are specified. Choreography may also refer to the design itself. " - I think it's not correct for the performers. -

I am planning to add a bunch of Spanish releases, but before I do that I would like to enter all credits correctly so I can copy similar releases that share the same labels.
These are the label credits on one of my discs (exactly as they are printed)
I have this info linked in the release page as:
"Companies Etc"
Phonographic Copyright (p) – RMM Records
Copyright (c) – RMM Records
Published By – Bat Discos S.A.
Distributed By – EMI-Odeon, S.A.
Manufactured By – Ibermemory, S.A.
One pointed out that "Publicado" meant "Record label" in this context. -

wrong. Record company: Bat Discos S.A. "Publicado por" means release by.
(p) Publicado y distribuido, con Licencia del Cesionario, por EMI-ODEON, S.A.
Here you have to choose: Record company: EMI-Odeon, S.A.
cdremixcollector
Manufactured By – Ibermemory, S.A.
Ok. Ibermemory, S.A. from 1986 to 1993, and then Sonopress Ibermemory, S.A. from 1993 to 2008
And FYI, due to the features in the spanish records we can even check it better if you add some scans of labels (and/or rear).

Thanks for the follow up emilianilo1972. I think you left a comment on one of my subs for Celia Cruz' Cruz de Navajas. That release had the same labels like the one I had the inquire about. Here is a pic of one of my discs:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/105824154@N05/10479349236/
So, if "publicado por" means "record company" in that context, then 2 record companies have to be entered?

2 record companies have to be entered
Yes, AFAIK...
About the picture: Is this picture related to this entry: Celia Cruz - Cruz De Navajas? If it is so, then you can add the picture to the release (if you want)
I know s can do whatever they want but better add pictures with entries. Please, notice the only real way to add a GOOD, ACCURATE submission is with pictures because this way other s can check your info. A main fact if you are newcomer, and even if you got a bunch of votes.

Yes the picture is of that release you mentioned. Next time I make a submission I may add pix like that, but for reference only. That was a partial picture anyways.
I think my submissions are pretty complete. I was hesitating to link labels due that they slightly differ from what's on the database and also it is not always easy to figure out the equivalents from other languages.
I left a comment on one of my submissions that you changed. I disagree with some of your changes. You removed some of my notes because you probably thought they were redundant, such "Fabricado Por", which I linked in Companies field as "Manufactured By". I enter the information in the notes exactly as it was printed on the release, for reference. Also my note about "CD'S Promocional" should have not been removed. That is a way to justify the format tag, and that was printed on the disc actually. -

Ok, as I doubt about remaining the release notes I'd like to use forum to ask if we really need to keep thaa kind of info in release notes:
"(p) Grabación sonora original realizada por: RMM RECORDS / FONOVISA / TH RODVEN
(p) Publicado con licencia del Cesionario en exclsuiva para España por: BAT DISCOS, S.A.
(p) Publicado y distribuido, con licencia del Cesionario por: EMI ODEON
Fabricado por: Servicios Ibéricos ENTERTAINMENT S.A.
CD'S Promocional"

I think those notes are needed. For example you picked up the wrong interpretation of one of the companies and that was possible because I had entered all the information as is (in Spanish).
Also many companies carry additional information such year, parent label, etc. I do not think it is mandatory to have the companies linked in first place. I could very well just not link anything and avoid the hassle. -
