Would it be possible to grade vinyl/CDs separately on audio quality and visual appearance?
I'm surprised Goldmine in the USA and the Record Collector grading system in the UK haven't been updated during the, what, 30 or 40 years they've existed for?
The buyer would get a clearer idea of what they are buying and the seller could grade better. Many times I've listed a record as 'very good' condition due to surface marks etc. but the audio has not been affected, playing as either a strong very good +, excellent or near mint

I'm not saying it should be compulsory for the seller to grade both, that would be their own decision (especially useful for the big sellers 'who don't have the time to play' everything) but the option to grade on both audio and visual appearance would be something that Discogs could offer and could be, for want of a better word, revolutionary in the world of selling records, CDs etc

Would be interested in knowing the thoughts of other s and the Discogs team

    Thanks

I can't see any need for this. Condition is condition, and both visual condition and audio quality are a part of that.

The best thing to do is to describe the condition in your sales listings. That way potential buyers will know exactly what they are getting. It will be a lot more informative than

    Visual Grade: VG+
    Audio Grade: NM

Looking at your example above, I think it would look great! Immediate clarity, then you could look further at the description instead of going through every description. I have for sale, and sold, plenty of very good revcords that have played perfectly but looked marked so

    Visual Grade: VG
    Audio Grade: NM

    would be ideal!

It's a tried and trusted way. The more info the better.

Not to me it wouldn't. I want some details before I commit. Sellers have such wide interpretations of grading; a description of the reality gives me confidence.

Why would you be averse to doing this?

marcsmusic I don't think you understand the suggestion. I'm not saying the description should be done away with, it's an essential part of selling here. This is what I am suggesting, using a record as an example:

    Media (Audio Quality) NM
    Media (Visual) VG
    Sleeve VG+

Record plays without any audible issues but has several visual scuffs/hairlines. Sleeve has very light marks but nothing serious

Nothing is being taken away with regards to information, there is actually more information which would only take two seconds to add when listing an item for sale
